Inspired by Yudisthira`s story, Yudisthira Swarga Organization founded in 1998, a frontier in animal welfare organization in Bali, Indonesia. It was Yudisthira’s first effort to work on dog population control and welfare in Bali.
The organization established by a group of local Balinese veterinarians and animal lovers in response to a bulk of tourist complains to local government on the poor condition of Bali dog strayed and roamed freely all over Bali streets. The government appointed Dr. IGN Badiwangsa Temaja to inisiate the act with the help from Dr. Luh Putu Listriani in private practice and Dr. IGN Putra Pemayun from Udayana Veterinary Faculty started the field work to run shelter and simple population control program. Due to lack of fund, animal lovers and a businessman Mr. Putu Sidharta helped to finance the activities. Adding to the founder team were Mr. I Nengah Juliana, a lawyer and Mr. Endah Permadi, a couregous dog handler to complete the squad into more solid organization. They roamed the Bali streets to catch stray dogs, treating and sterile them in the shelter for adoption or leave them free on the street in better condition. It was Ken Grant, a teacher at Bali International School and animal lover with the help of his wife Sherry Grant loved volunteering and put the first effort as marketers to search aids from international animal welfare organization such as WSPA, IFAW and HIS. The main goal, to improve the condition of Bali`s stray dogs to providing mobile clinics to treat those poor dogs, spayed and neutered at the clinic seemed not enough for animal huge problem in Bali. International Aids poured Yudisthira with more facilities such as mobile clinics and run bigger effort to wider region throughout Bali.
Control population in dogs simultaneously trained and educated the community on animal welfare thus trained local veterinarians on animal health issues for the better welfare of animals. Yudisthira widen the eyes to put an effort on touching farm animal welfare issues at the slaughter houses in Indonesia. International aids helped Yudisthira to response quickly in emergency disaster relieve in animal welfare case such as Aceh Tsunami and Jogyakarta earthquake. Yudisthira worked closely with IVMA and Udayana University to support animal welfare curriculum into veterinary faculty and encouraged students to volunteering in the work field.
